The short version
Leaving 6sense is a data and integration project, not a cancellation. The platform has usually been wired into Salesforce or HubSpot fields, Marketo or HubSpot programs, sales views, ad accounts, and reporting for a year or more, and the things that break when it is switched off are the things nobody documented. This checklist works backwards from the renewal date: export everything you own, rebuild audiences in the replacement, decommission CRM fields deliberately, hand off advertising without a dark period, and give yourself 90 days. Every step below is a task you can assign.
The single most important rule: start before you give notice. 6sense contracts typically require 60 to 90 days' notice of non-renewal, and once notice is given, your customer success contact has no incentive to help with exports. Do the export work first.
90-day migration timeline
| Window | Workstream | Tasks | Owner | Done when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Day 90–75 | Decision and inventory | Confirm renewal date and notice period; inventory every 6sense integration, field, segment, ad campaign, report, and user; select replacement vendor(s); request buyout terms | Marketing ops lead | Inventory spreadsheet complete; replacement contract in legal |
| Day 75–60 | Data export | Export segments, account lists, contact data purchased with credits, intent history, engagement history, scoring model definitions, campaign performance | Marketing ops + RevOps | All exports in a shared drive with a manifest |
| Day 60 | Notice | Send written non-renewal notice per contract terms; confirm receipt in writing | Procurement | Acknowledgement received |
| Day 60–45 | Replacement setup | Implement replacement platform; connect CRM and MAP; import account lists; rebuild top-priority segments | Marketing ops + vendor CSM | Replacement live in sandbox; first segments populated |
| Day 45–30 | Parallel run | Run both platforms; compare audience overlap and intent flags; duplicate live ad campaigns in the replacement | Demand gen + paid media | Replacement campaigns delivering; overlap report reviewed |
| Day 30–15 | CRM and MAP cutover | Repoint workflows, lead routing, and scoring rules to replacement fields; freeze 6sense field writes; update sales views and reports | RevOps + Salesforce/HubSpot admin | No active automation references 6sense fields |
| Day 15–0 | Ad handoff and shutdown | Pause 6sense DSP campaigns; confirm replacement campaigns at full budget; revoke 6sense API keys and user access; archive 6sense fields (do not delete) | Paid media + IT | 6sense spend at zero; access removed |
| Day 0–+30 | Post-migration | Reconcile pipeline attribution; retrain sales on new views; delete archived fields after 30 clean days; document the new stack | Marketing ops | Attribution report published; docs updated |
Step 1: Export everything you own
What you own is your data: account lists, contacts you paid credits for, engagement history on your accounts, and the definitions of the segments and models you built. What you do not own is 6sense's intent model, its third-party intent feeds, or its contact database. Export the first category completely; the second category cannot be exported and should be replaced, not migrated.
| Asset | Where it lives | Export method | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Segments and their filter logic | Segments UI | Screenshot or document the filters; export member account lists as CSV | Filter logic is not exportable as a file; document it manually |
| Account lists (named, static) | Segments / Lists | CSV export | Include 6sense account ID, domain, CRM ID |
| Contacts acquired with credits | Sales Intelligence / Contacts | CSV export or already synced to CRM | Check the contract: some terms restrict retention after termination |
| Buying-stage and intent history | Account timelines; CRM fields | CRM field history export (Salesforce field history tracking, HubSpot property history) | Only what was synced to CRM is retrievable at scale |
| Website visitor identification history | Web activity reports | Report export by date range | Export monthly slices; large date ranges time out |
| Predictive model configuration | Model settings | Document inputs, weights, and the conversion definition used | Needed to rebuild scoring elsewhere |
| Ad campaign performance | Advertising reports | CSV by campaign, by month | Keep for year-over-year attribution |
| Keyword and topic configuration | Intent settings | Document the keyword list and topic mapping | Map to replacement vendor's taxonomy (e.g., Bombora topics) |
| User list and roles | Admin | Export | For access revocation and retraining |
| Integration configuration | Integrations | Document field mappings, sync frequency, filters | Screenshots are fine; you need them for cutover |
Put everything in a single folder with a manifest listing each file, the date exported, the row count, and the person who exported it. This sounds bureaucratic; it prevents the "did we ever export the EMEA segment" conversation in month four.
Step 2: Rebuild audiences in the replacement
Audiences do not migrate; they get rebuilt. The good news is that most 6sense segments are combinations of a static account list, a firmographic filter, and an intent or engagement condition, and every serious replacement supports all three. The intent condition is the part that changes most, because the replacement's intent source will differ from 6sense's.
| 6sense component | Demandbase | Metadata.io (sponsor) | RollWorks | Bombora + own stack |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Static account list (CSV) | Account list upload | Account list upload / CRM sync | Target account list upload | CRM list; push to ad platforms |
| Firmographic filter | Native firmographics | Native plus CRM fields | Native | CRM or enrichment vendor |
| Intent condition (buying stage / keywords) | Demandbase intent; keyword sets | Bombora and G2 intent via integrations | Bombora-based intent | Bombora Company Surge topics |
| Website engagement condition | Demandbase web tag | Website visitor identification | RollWorks pixel | Bombora Visitor Insights or other de-anonymisation |
| Predictive score threshold | Demandbase pipeline predict | Not a predictive score; use intent + fit | Account scoring | Build in CRM or BI |
| CRM stage / owner filter | CRM sync | CRM sync | CRM sync | CRM native |
Rebuild in priority order: the segments that feed live ad campaigns first, then the segments sales uses in CRM views, then reporting segments. Expect the intent-driven segments to differ in size by a wide margin from their 6sense equivalents, because 6sense's buying-stage model and, say, Bombora's topic surge are different measures. Run the overlap report in the parallel window and reset expectations with sales before cutover rather than after.
Keyword mapping deserves its own task. 6sense intent is configured around your keyword list; Bombora, Demandbase, and G2 use topic taxonomies. Map each 6sense keyword to the nearest replacement topic, and accept that some keywords have no equivalent. Our 6sense vs Bombora page explains the difference in signal design.
Step 3: Decommission CRM and MAP fields deliberately
6sense writes a set of fields to accounts, contacts, and leads: buying stage, intent score, profile fit, segment membership, last web visit, and others. Over time these fields get referenced by workflows, lead routing, list views, reports, dashboards, and sometimes by other tools' sync rules. Deleting them on day zero breaks all of that silently.
| Step | Action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Run a "where is this field used" audit for every 6sense field (Salesforce: field dependencies / Where is this used; HubSpot: property usage) | Finds workflows, reports, and views you forgot |
| 2 | Create replacement fields for the new vendor with clear, vendor-named labels | Avoids reusing 6sense fields and mixing data |
| 3 | Repoint each workflow, routing rule, and report to the new fields | One at a time, with a change log |
| 4 | Disable the 6sense managed package sync (Salesforce) or app connection (HubSpot); leave fields in place | Stops new writes without deleting history |
| 5 | Rename 6sense fields with a "zz_archived_" prefix and remove from page layouts | Makes stale data obvious to reps |
| 6 | After 30 clean days, export field history and delete the fields and the managed package | Removes clutter once nothing references them |
In Marketo or HubSpot, check smart lists and enrolment triggers separately; a smart list keyed on "6sense buying stage = Decision" will quietly go empty and stop a nurture without an error. In Salesforce, uninstalling the managed package deletes its custom objects, so export first.
Step 4: Hand off advertising without a dark period
6sense's display advertising runs through its own DSP, so there is no ad account to transfer; when the contract ends, the campaigns stop. The handoff is therefore about having the replacement at full delivery before 6sense goes dark, and about capturing what you need for attribution.
| Item | Action | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| Campaign inventory | List every live 6sense campaign: audience, creative, budget, flight dates, targets | Day 90 |
| Creative assets | Download all creative from 6sense; store with campaign names | Day 75 |
| Performance history | Export campaign, segment, and account-level performance by month | Day 75 |
| Replacement campaigns | Rebuild in the replacement platform (Metadata, RollWorks, Demandbase, LinkedIn direct) against rebuilt audiences | Day 60–45 |
| Parallel run | Run both at reduced budgets for two weeks; compare reach and CPM | Day 45–30 |
| LinkedIn matched audiences | If 6sense pushed audiences to LinkedIn, rebuild them from the replacement or from CSV; 6sense-created audiences will stop refreshing | Day 45 |
| Budget shift | Move full budget to replacement; pause 6sense campaigns | Day 15 |
| Attribution reconciliation | Decide how 6sense view-through influence is reported for the last quarter; document the change in method | Day 0–+30 |
One warning on attribution: 6sense's reporting credits view-through influence generously, and pipeline "influenced" numbers will drop when it is turned off regardless of what the replacement does. Brief leadership on the reporting change before the numbers move, not after. Benchmarks for what account-based advertising should deliver are on abmbenchmarks.com.
Step 5: Sales enablement and access
Sales reps who used the 6sense Chrome extension or CRM views need a replacement habit. Schedule enablement for the new tool in the parallel window, not after cutover. On the last day, revoke all 6sense user logins, API keys, and the CRM integration user; a lingering integration user with write access is the most common post-migration surprise. Finally, keep one admin login active until the contract formally ends in case a late export is needed.
Paying for the switch
Migration has a cost: internal time, a possible overlap period, and implementation fees on the replacement. Two things offset it. First, competitor buyout programs: Metadata (our sponsor, disclosed) publishes a 6sense buyout offer, and Demandbase publishes a move-over guide; details on our buyout programs page. Second, the replacement is usually cheaper: our 6sense pricing page puts the reported 6sense range at $60,000 to $200,000+ per year, and most point-solution stacks land well below the top of that. Model the switch as a 12-month TCO, including the overlap month, before deciding.
Our verdict
The teams that regret leaving 6sense are not the ones who chose the wrong replacement; they are the ones who gave notice, then discovered the exports, the field dependencies, and the ad dark period one at a time. Export first, rebuild in parallel, cut over the CRM last, and keep the archived fields for 30 days. Ninety days is enough if the work starts on day 90.
Frequently asked questions
How much notice do I need to give 6sense?
Notice periods are set in your contract and commonly range from 60 to 90 days before the renewal date. Confirm the exact clause; auto-renewal is standard.
Can I export my data from 6sense?
You can export account lists, segment membership, contacts acquired with credits, campaign reports, and anything already synced to your CRM. The intent model and third-party intent feeds are not exportable.
What happens to 6sense fields in Salesforce when I cancel?
Nothing automatically. The fields stay until you uninstall the managed package. Uninstalling deletes its custom objects, so export first and archive fields before deleting.
Do 6sense ad campaigns transfer to another platform?
No. 6sense advertising runs on its own DSP, so campaigns must be rebuilt in the replacement. Download creative and export performance before the contract ends.
How long does it take to switch from 6sense?
Plan for 90 days from decision to shutdown, with a 30-day post-migration reconciliation. Replacement platform implementation typically fits within the middle 30 days.
Will a competitor pay to move me off 6sense?
Some do. Metadata publishes a 6sense buyout program (our sponsor, disclosed) and Demandbase publishes a move-over guide. Terms are on our buyout programs page.
